San Francisco City Hall wedding: how the reception DJ and timeline work

A City Hall ceremony is short, beautiful and already handled. The reception is where you need a DJ and MC, and because there is no ceremony to cover, the timeline and the package look different from a full-day wedding. Here's how we plan it.

What City Hall handles, and what it doesn't

City Hall civil ceremonies run on the building's schedule, in the rotunda or a reserved spot on the upper floors, with no outside audio or music. Your photographer handles the staircase portraits. So the DJ's day starts when yours moves to the reception, which is why most City Hall couples don't need ceremony sound at all.

That changes two things: you're usually a fit for Essential+ rather than a bigger package, and the grand entrance happens the moment you walk into the reception venue, so the MC's first job is the first thing guests see.

Three kinds of City Hall reception

Restaurant buyout or private room

The most common. Forty to eighty guests in the Mission, Hayes Valley, North Beach or a Nob Hill hotel restaurant. A compact system at conversation volume through dinner, mics for toasts, then a dance set that doesn't overpower a room with a kitchen next to it. Most restaurants have no loading dock; we plan the loading zone and the two-hour load-in with them.

Loft, gallery or rooftop

SoMa, Dogpatch and Potrero spaces with brick, concrete and a view. More room to dance, more echo to tune for, and on a rooftop a 10 PM outdoor music cap at many venues. Uplighting (Luxe) is what makes a raw loft feel like a wedding after dark.

Hotel ballroom

A City Hall ceremony with a full ballroom reception for 150 or more. This is a Signature+ or Luxe day: photo booth in the foyer, uplighting in the ballroom, and a dock to load through.

A sample City Hall day

TimeMoment
1:30 PMCeremony at City Hall. We are not needed here.
2:00 PMPortraits on the staircase and around Civic Center. We load into the reception venue.
4:30 PMGuests arrive at the reception; cocktail set at conversation volume. Photo booth opens if you have one.
5:30 PMGrand entrance as you walk in from photos, straight into the first dance or straight to dinner, your call.
6:00 PMDinner and toasts, mics handed to each speaker.
7:30 PMFloor opens. Your must-plays first, then whatever keeps it full.
9:30 PMCake, last dance, send-off. Breakdown after your guests leave.

Because there's no ceremony gap, City Hall receptions often run shorter and start earlier than a full-day wedding, which is one reason Essential+ fits so well.

City logistics we handle

  • Loading: loading zones, freight elevators and garage clearances confirmed with the venue before the day.
  • Parking: we plan it so nobody is circling the block at load-in.
  • Outdoor sound: rooftops and patios often cap amplified music around 10 PM; we front-load the set when that applies.
  • Neighbors: restaurant and loft receptions in residential blocks get speakers aimed at the floor and subs kept modest.

Which package

Essential+ ($3,600) for restaurant and loft receptions: DJ, MC, sound and mics for the whole reception. Signature+ ($5,300) when you want the photo booth, which is the keepsake guests take home from a City Hall wedding. Luxe ($6,700) for ballrooms and evening lofts that need light. FAQ

City Hall reception questions.

General booking questions are answered in the homepage FAQ.

We're doing City Hall on a Friday with dinner after. Is that too small for a DJ?

No. Forty guests still want the toasts mic'd and a first dance called, and a compact system fits a private dining room. Essential+ is built for exactly this.

Can you play music at City Hall itself?

No outside audio is allowed in the building, and civil ceremonies don't use it. We start at the reception.

Our reception is on a rooftop. Can we dance outside?

Usually until the venue's outdoor cutoff, often 10 PM. We plan the dance set to land before it, and many rooftops have an indoor space the party moves into after.

Do you work with our restaurant's existing speakers?

Sometimes, for background music. For toasts and the dance set we bring our own system, sized to the room, so the sound is reliable.
